What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every student can thrive at our school.
Staff regularly use differentiated tasks within their programming and teaching that adjust pace, tasks and complexity.
Structured peer collaboration and reflection occur within safe learning environments that encourage confidence, risk-taking, and perseverance.
Class structures and timetabling enable a wide range of opportunities for extension within the curriculum through engagement with Kitchen/Garden, Computer lab and Library, amongst others.
Our staff regularly engage in professional development to ensure the most current research-based practices are being used.
Students are able to engage in opportunities including:
- Wiradjuri language and cultural learning with ties to The Language Nest.
- Debating.
- Chess Club.
- Tournament of Minds.
- Eisteddfod.
- Student leadership opportunities.
- Band (Dubbo Conservatorium).
- Cultural activities including Darranbal and Wiradjuri girls dance group.
- Participation in whole-school inclusion and wellbeing initiatives such as Drumbeat, Boys Shed, Bounce Back and Take -The-Time.
- Participation in Mathematics theme days like Pi day, Duck Day and International Day of Mathematics.
- WPS News and Yearbook.
- NSW Public Schools Poetry Slam.
- Young Archies.
- Country Press N.S.W. writing competition.
- Dream Cricket.
- Moorambilla Voices.
- Links to community organisations such as Wellington Amateur Theatrical Society (WATS) and Wellington Aboriginal Community Health Service (WACHS) curry cook-off.
The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
Our school accesses the Aurora College, providing innovative, flexible learning in a whole new context, by allowing students to connect locally and learn globally.
The Premier’s Spelling Bee promotes our students’ vocabulary development and attention to detail in competitive settings.
The Premier’s Debating Challenge helps our students to build logical arguments and confidence in public speaking.
Many of our students progress beyond school competitions to district and beyond. 2025 State Finalists for Slam Poetry and Tournament of Minds.

Our school participated in two different debating competitions - The Premier's Debating Challenge and the Kerri Parkes Western Challenge competing with students from around the district and state.
