Playground Cleanliness

Our Positive Behaviour for Learning is founded on the statement that at Wellington Public School we are safe, respectful learners. Being respectful of our school is prominent in our discussions and it is really pleasing to see so many students striving very hard to practise what being safe respectful learners looks like in different contexts and locations around the school. Our focus this week is looking to keep our playing areas clean and tidy and free of rubbish. So many children try hard to look after what belongs to them and those who make the big efforts are rewarded for doing the right thing. It's good that far more of our students do the right thing and that it's only a smaller number who let us down. There has been some concern about rubbish in the playground but hopefully, if we keep teaching and encouraging acceptable behaviours, we will gradually have everyone doing the right thing. The standards we achieve can be enhanced by having high expectations of children trying to do the right thing at home and having higher standards set within our community.

I was driving to school the other morning and couldn't help noticing how beautiful Wellington was looking in the morning sunshine. Everything seemed groomed and looking good until I saw where someone had obviously thrown rubbish out of their car and it lay strewn on the roadside in front of Cameron Park. I suppose if we have some people like this in our community it stands to reason that some children perhaps don't know any better and it's harder to educate these girls and boys in doing the right thing.

There is a commonly accepted saying, "It takes a community to educate a child".
