School Staff Development Day

Teachers and support staff were back at school for our School Development Day. Or Agenda included:

The initial process of looking at developing a new plan around the issue of Bullying. We are adhering to a new Departmental document entitled ‘Preventing and Responding to Student Bullying in Schools'. This developmental process is expected to take a number of weeks and will include lots of community consultation. The policy requires schools to develop protection, prevention, early intervention and response strategies for student bullying. The policy relates to other departmental policies relating to such things as discipline and student wellbeing. Each week we will include updates in the Whisper.

A visit from our Area Home School Liaison Team where discussions revolved around the high number of absences form some of our students at Wellington Public School. Looking at the bottom line, attendance at school is mandatory and every day away means that students miss valuable learning time. Anything less than 85% attendance comes under the watchful eye of the HSLO team as do unexplained absences. We ask that parents communicate with class teachers immediately after a student's absence. Written explanations are preferable.

A mandatory review of the ‘Code of Conduct' that applies to all school staff. This is a framework to make decisions around personal conduct preceded by a statement of ethics that relate to the values that underpin the Department's expectations of its employees. These values include fairness, respect, integrity and responsibility.

Corporate, Stage-based planning time for term 3 and a look specifically at the resourcing of ‘hands-on' materials needed to conduct effective teaching and learning in Mathematics. We are going to look at upgrading our resource needs in this important curriculum area.
