The Importance of Attendance

Lots of students have excellent attendance. Many have fair attendance but the attendance of a large number is poor to disgraceful. Where students are away, they are obviously missing significant learning connections. There is naturally a strong correlation between high levels of absenteeism and the students who perform at low levels in their classroom assessments.

The one thing parents can do, and have a responsibility and a legal requirement to do, is to maximise their children's attendance at school.

Our attendance is at a level where class rolls are being scrutinised regularly by the Home School Liaison Team and some students have personal attendance plans and at worst, some are on a mobility tracker to see where the students are and why they are not attending school.

If there are problems, please work with the school to improve attendance and thus assist in increasing the chance of a good education for your children. A positive work ethic would mean that any absences would only occur in very significant circumstances.

Again, the best place to start in shaping positive attitudes, is when children are young.

Kindergarten classes are about to launch an attendance strategy called "Spot On". Please read the article on this strategy in this issue of the Whisper, written by Mrs Hawke, our Early Stage 1 supervisor.
